Convert music to DRM, sadly yes

Is it possible to convert music files like mp3 to an DRM format? Or that would be illegal because of the "rights" on the DRM formats. I was wondering because the new phone i bought only accepts DRM files (and of course i have to download them $$$ and buy them $$$ from my wireless phone provider..). I don't understand why i should literally give money to get the music i already own.... This is horrible, i feel like i'm the victim of a "legal" scam. Herbman

I've never heard of that before.  I know a while ago that many devices forced you to use their tools to copy files to your device and that wrapped them with a proprietary format (DRM or sorts) but I'm not sure about forcing the songs to have DRM before they are on the phone.  What phone do you have and what format is it telling you that you must have?
